My name is Kendra Reid and I am currently a public relations student at Mohawk College. I have a dog named Mocha and I am also employed as a flight attendant at Porter Airlines. I graduated from Niagara College with a diploma in Broadcasting in 2002, and spent a few years working in radio and television afterwards. I made the switch to aviation about five years ago, as it was always an industry that I held an interest for me.
Throughout my life journey, I have acquired a diverse range of talents and skills. Due to my intensive aviation training, I am knowledgeable in many different aspects of safety and daily work within Transport Canada aviation rules and regulations. As fire on an aircraft is one of the worst case scenarios, it is a requirement that I know about fire, the different classes they fall into and how to fight them. I am a certified First Aid provider and carry safety training and skills that allow me to function in virtually any type of crisis or incident within an aircraft. As I mentioned before, along with my aviation training, I spent quite a few years working in broadcasting and television production. I have a very good understanding live-to-air events and broadcasts, and feel those skills are very transferable into event planning and management. I am comfortable with reporters due to my media background and am familiar with many aspects of production. From working with a variety of people, I have very well developed social skills and am very effective at creating and maintaining relationships, both professionally and personally.
My ten year plan is not quite set in stone as there are so many different aspects of the public relations industry that interest me. Within the next year I hope to be gainfully employed and developing my skills within the communications or public relations department of an agency or airline. I am also interested in event production and I feel this would also be a great aspect of the industry with which to gain experience in. Within three years, I would like to be managing my own client accounts within an agency, or holding a more senior position within the organization I am with. Ideally, I would like to be working within an organization or agency that will allow me to focus and fine tune my skills in crisis communications, media relations and event management. That way by the time I hit the five year mark, I will have developed a strong enough portfolio and acquired a range of public relations experience which will allow me to focus into one particular area or strength. Perhaps in five years I will have enough experience to be a manager or director of a communications department or agency, and again, one that specializes in a certain field of public relations. In ten years I would like to open my own agency that specializes in crisis communications, event management and/or media relations.
Whatever the next ten years hold, I am looking forward to learning all I that I can learn about the public relations industry and cannot wait to get started!
Very interesting. The nice thing about PR is the fact that you can work at it in almost any field - i.e. the Airline industry.
